Dental Implants
Dental implants are a cutting-edge solution for replacing missing teeth. They provide a natural-looking and durable alternative to traditional dentures and bridges. Implants are designed to look, feel, and function like natural teeth, providing a long-term and effective way to restore your smile.

What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is an artificial root made of titanium that is inserted into the jaw bone. Over time, titanium can fuse to the bone cells in the jaw, a process known as osseointegration. Above the anchored titanium root, a custom crown is placed on top that looks like a natural tooth and restores chewing function. Dental implants can also be used underneath a denture to make it fit better or to anchor multiple crowns together as a fixed bridge. Dr. Chehroudi's research at the University of British Columbia focuses on the properties of titanium and the interactions it has with our body that lead to the strongest bone-to-implant bond. He has been involved in developing the implant field since its introduction in the early 1990s.

When do I need to get a Dental Implant?
If you have a missing tooth or need an extraction, replacing it as soon as possible is best. Over time, the neighbouring teeth can start to tilt into the empty space and make it harder to chew. The bone in the area can also start to shrink because it isn't being stimulated anymore (think of how your arm shrinks if you have to wear a cast and the muscles/bones are not being used). If you have had a missing tooth for a long time and the jaw bone in the area is missing, additional grafting procedures may be needed before an implant can be placed.

Why do the costs of Dental Implants vary so much?
The costs for dental implants can vary quite a lot. This is largely because of the type of implants that are used in different offices and other countries. The expertise of the dental laboratory that designs the crown on top of the implant can also affect the cost. Having a properly designed crown that doesn't trap food or bacteria and is easy to keep clean can play a large role in the longevity of your dental implant. An implant is not like other commodities, like a dishwasher or car, which can easily have price comparisons between dealers. It is a medical device which directly affects your quality of life. There are vast differences among the quality and peer-reviewed research for implants of different companies. Components of premium implants with long-term successful research will have a higher cost than lesser-known knockoff competitor brands. We do not believe the savings with these lesser-known implant brands are worth risking potential long-term complications. We prefer using products that have evidence to support their successful outcomes. At Scident, our implants are strictly from the Switzerland-based company, Straumann. Straumann's implant history dates back to 1974, and they are known for producing extremely reliable implants with extensive clinical research to support their products.
