Filling Post Op Instructions

Post Care for Filling Procedures

White/Tooth Coloured Fillings

1.White or tooth coloured fillings are set and hardened during the appointment.  A curing light is used to set the filling. If you did not have any freezing or dental anesthetic you will be fine to eat and chew as normal right after the appointment.

2.If you have had dental freezing for your filling procedure be careful not to bite or chew your lip, cheek or tongue. If you had treatment on a lower tooth you may have your tongue and lip numb on that side so it would be best to wait until the freezing has worn off before eating or chewing.

3. Some temperature sensitivity maybe experienced as your tooth gets use to the new material placed in it,  and how it conducts to hot and cold.  This in normal and you should avoid extreme temperatures until it settles down.  If the pain or sensitivity gets worse rather than better please contact our office to talk to our staff to advise you if you will need to come in for a check appointment.

4. The dentist will check the way you bit your teeth once the filling is complete, however at times the bite has shifted or you bite differently when you have had dental anesthetic.  If the filling it too high you will need to come in for a quick adjustment appointment. You will not need any dental anesthetic for this adjustment appointment.

Silver or Metal Fillings

1. In some cases a silver filling may be used to restore your teeth.  Silver fillings require time to set. You should wait at least 2 hours before biting or chewing and until the freezing has worn off if your lip and tongue are still numb. After the two hours please avoid biting and chewing on the side the filling was placed.

2. Please give the filling a full 24 hours before resuming regular biting and chewing.

TIP:

Drinking lots of fluids can help to flush out the dental anesthetic out of your system faster than without.
